For ever…

Looking at the title don't assume the post is going to be about LOVE. It's about software licenses. The only registered most of us buy is Windows, of course it's forced on us by the manufacturers. How about application that we use everyday? Like photoshop, office and so for which license has to be bought. There are always free alternatives and even open source apps which works flawlessly. All of this paid app has to be upgraded whenever an new version comes up which sucks. And if developer decides to update to an higher version too often I end up using an old incompatible piece of garbage.

I do love using open source app only if it works the way I wanted it to. There are apps that works but doesn't handle everything in an nice way and had to tinker it. The middle way is to find an app that we had to buy only once and keep upgrade use it for ever. However there are only two apps which provides such licence.

WinRar

Surprisingly WinRar licence is valid for life. And it's the only archive app I ever had to use on windows. Even the trial version keeps working for ever but pops up an window evertime opened. Worth paying for an window user.

Echofon

In an quest of finding an nice twitter client for MAC, I ended up using Echofon. It can sync unread tweets across devices, really useful feature which no other client offer. Free version works great but disaply ads for the developers to make money. Ads can be removed by purchaisng an licence which like Winrar works for ever. For MAC/iPhone users Echofon very well could be the ultimate twitter client. Did I mention it also works as an firefox extension?

Would be nice to know about other apps offering life long licenses.

Android apps for India

Mobile app store has created a lot of fun and money. Are there any useful mobile apps for India? Searching android app store returned some pretty interesting apps. Here is my top 5.

India Clock Widget

Android without an widget? No way. Decent looking clock widgets. Nothing spectacular but will impress non-Indinas for sure.

Cricket India News

Mobile browsers suck. Here is an app to say up to date on Cricket news.

NDTV News

No official NDTV app for Android yet though there is an iPad app. Unofficial app does the job for android.

Indian Fairy tales

Haven't used this app yet but find it interesting. Hope they add more stories.

Matrimonial Alerts

This one is interesting. Can attract some audience for sure. Haven't tried this as well but applaud the idea.

Though I don't use most of the above app frequently, one app I use is Goundamani Sound Board. Nice collection of ringtone but remember to put you phone in silent mode if going for an meeting. Ringtones are funny though.

Apple fans care a lot about Android

Look at how many comments an Android story attracts in /r/apple

May be Android users ignore the story and live in self denial.

Why HTC Magic will be my last Android smartphone?

Impressed by the cute ads Motorola, HTC & Sony plays for their android devices? Looking to buy an Android smartphone? Keep reading.

First smartphone I ever used is iPhone 2G. It works great. Apps, syncs with iTunes, Outlook. All is fine till I lose it on Chennai MRTC.

Next adventure is with HTC Magic. Runs Android 1.5 when I bought, not as polished as iPhone 2G was, doesn't sync with iTunes (doubletwist can sync) or Outlook. Still it works well as long Google is all you use. Got some real great apps, syncs with GMail, Google calendar & Contacts.

Doesn't the two look even? It does when you buy the device.

After an year Android 2.2 is out and guess what HTC doesn't provide update for HTC Magic anymore. I was stuck with Android 1.6. Good for me I rooted my device and thanks to cyanogen I flashed Android 2.2. But I lose out warranty and official support. With lot many Android device coming out it's all messed up. Downloading Android and installing it on phone is not like what we do with Windows. Every android device seems to be running their own version of Android.

Now iPhone 2G if I still had with me, would had received constant update from Apple.

Buying Android from anyone other than Google, be prepared to be left out without updates after an year. Sadly Google no longer sells nexus one. Android has become more like old Nokia phone where the phone runs the same dull OS till it dies.

No android phones if there are no future updates. I don't want to have an brick after an year.

Facebook sharing screwed?

Has FaceBook's privacy setting screwed sharing and comments?

One common annoyance, let's say person A uploads an photo, person B comments on it. Person B is friend of mine and I can view all photos in that album but can't comment on it. Is this not insane? If I can view the photo, should I be not able to comment on it. How will person A knew I had viewed his photo album because person B liked/commented on it!!

I had to thank you all guys for bringing in your friends photos/links/videos for an great fun & time pass.

Another annoyance, can't like or share links/videos my friends(via his friend) has liked. I could re-share but doesn't it break the chain?

How do you guys feel about it? FaceBook got stuck between privacy and being social at same time!?
